Yehudi Menuhin: Tchaikovsky - Serenade for string orchestra op 48 - I. Pezzo in forma di sonata

TCHAIKOVSKY, Pyotr Il'yich

Serenade for string orchestra in C major op. 48

I. Pezzo in forma di sonatina

Yehudi Menuhin, guest conductor

Orquesta de Cámara Freixenet de la Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía

This recording supposes an incomparable historical document on the figure of Yehudi Menuhin. In this 1997 rehearsal, two years before his death, Maestro Menuhin congratulates the orchestra on its magnificent sound, corrects questions of rhythm and dynamics, and comments how to articulate certain notes to give the appropriate expression. It is important to phrase with greater directionality, and sometimes accompanied by a small accelerando. He talks about the balanced use of rubato. The first notes in cello and double bass should be retained in the ascending phrase. Menuhin explains a possible division of phrasing into a 2+2+3 note structure, and has to be played on violins with more fantasy. They work on phrasing in several passages separately. One advice: just because a sound is long does not mean it is played in advance. Menuhin makes frequent corrections to the direction of the bow to make it suitable for phrasing.
