Pablo Heras-Casado: Schumann - Symphony no. 2 op 61 - I. Sostenuto assai - Allegro ma non troppo

SCHUMANN, Robert

Symphony no. 2 in C major op 61

I. Sostenuto assai - Allegro ma non troppo

Pablo Heras-Casado, guest conductor

Orquesta Sinfónica Freixenet de la Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía

Heras-Casado comments on various aspects in the introduction Sostenuto assai: the passage from tremolos to chords for two with sforzato, the chords must have resonance in the strings. In the Allegro, they work on the articulation of some passages of the strings, where it must be played alla corda, and of the winds, which should be clearer. In strings, when we have a non-thematic note, we relax the articulation and play it spiccato. The articulation must always be very active. After the fortepiano, the phrasing may continue, giving the phrase more volume. In Con fuoco, the quarter-notes in woods are marcato and very articulated. In general, the Maestro insists on aspects of articulation to give much more clarity to the performance.
