SAINT-SAËNS, Camille
Concerto for cello and orchestra no. 1 in A minor op. 33 (cello and piano reduction)
II. Allegro con moto
Pablo Ferrández, guest professor
Hugo Domínguez, student
Ofelia Montalván, accompanying pianist
After the student's performance, the professor advises him to focus more on the notes, musical phrasing, and to put more intention into his playing, listening to himself and analyzing the expressive needs of each moment of the music.
They work from the beginning, note by note, because each one must have its appropriate color, tension, expression, and vibrato according to the musical discourse. It is also crucial for him to take great care in connecting the notes, to be more self-demanding, and not allow himself to play empty notes, ensuring better endings.
To improve bow changes, Ferrández suggests an exercise of playing in the same bow area. Throughout, he insists that the student avoid playing "dead" notes.
