MENDELSSOHN, Felix
Concerto for piano and orchestra no. 2 in D minor op. 40 (orchestra part reduced for piano)
III. Finale. Presto scherzando
Mikhail Voskresensky, guest professor
Katharina Treutler, student
Denis Lossev, accompanying pianist
In this masterclass, Voskresensky indicates firstly that Finale must be very alive and fast, not to be so lyrical in the quarters part. In the professor's opinion, so many changes between rubato and a tempo have stopped and lost the character (similar to the best champagne) that this movement should show. The idea is to play it more leggiero but not loosing the waltz character in 3, setting the first beat.
Afterwards, Voskresensky insists on the leggiero character, the rhythm and playing forte at the same time, which is complicated. The student also must not to do stops: the music must fly like a bird.
