Lorin Maazel: Strauss - Violin sonata op 18 - I. Allegro ma non troppo

STRAUSS, Richard

Sonata for violin and piano in E flat major TrV 151 op. 18

I. Allegro ma non troppo

Lorin Maazel, guest professor

Mohamed Hiber, student

Alina Artemyeva, accompanying pianist

The masterclass begins with a comment by Maazel about the pitch duration in a certain passage: do not play too quick for not losing the break sensation. Lorin Maazel gives also indications on finger placing: flat position on the string, more necessary in fast passages to get a better quality of sound. In a specific passage, more metric accuracy to obtain a kinder character.

Also indications about phrasing, tuning and absolute hearing. For a better vibrato, the professor recommends more use of the arm.
