Encounter of Santander
Alejandro Viana was born in Madrid in 1996. He begins his studies of cello at age of 7 years old. In 2013 wins the Extraordinary Prize of Degree in Conservatory P. Soler de San Lorenzo de El Escorial (Madrid). He studies with the teacher María de Macedo, and continued his studies under Lluis Claret in Barcelona. Then he followed in Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía under Ivan Monighetti, and previously with Natalia Shakhoskaya. Currently he studies in Hans Eissler with Claudius Popp. He has received masterclasses from teachers like Raphaël Pidoux, Christophe Coin, Jean-Guihen Queyras, Wolfang Boetcher, Amit Peled, Wolfgang E. Schmidt, Claudio Bohórquez, Ralph Kirshbaum, Stephan Forck, Alexander Rudin, Philippe Müller, Gary Hoffman, Jens-Peter Maintz, Gautier Capuçon, Menahem Pressler, Gidon Kremer, Frans Helmerson and Truls Mork. He has participated in Verbier Festival, IMS Prussia Cove, Festival d’Aix en Provence, Rutesheim Festival, Santander Festival, Kronberg Academy Masterclasses, Menuhin Festival, playing with maestros like Zakhar Bron, Ivan Monighetti, Mihaela Martin, Nobuko Imai, Frans Helmerson, Kirill Gerstein, Daniel Barenboim, Zubin Mehta, András Schiff and Krysztof Penderecki. He has also performed André Previn “Nonet” with Anne-Sophie Mutter. In his school he has been awarded six times with the “Most Outstanding Student” prize by the Her Majesty the Queen of Spain. He has been part of the Classe d`Excellence de Violoncelle 2018/2019 at the Fondation Louis Vuitton with Gautier Capuçon. He recently played his debut in Carnegie Hall. He is part of the Staatskapelle Berlin Academy.
He has received first prizes in several competitions like International Cello Competition in Liezen (Austria), II Concurso Nacional de Violoncello “Jaime Dobato Benavente” de Alcañiz (Teruel), Elbphilarmonie Debut, Manhattan Competition, Soncello Competition, IX International Cello Competition 'Antonio Janigro' and the Special Award “The Zagreb Soloists” celebrated in Poreč (Croatia), Llanes International Cello Competition, and International “Karl Davidov” Cello Competition in Kuldiga (Latvia). He is also holder of “Juventudes Musicales” scholarship.
He has played as soloist with the Chamber Orchestra Andrés Segovia, The Zagreb Soloists, Liepaja Symphony Orchestra, IUVENTAS Orchestra, Málaga Philarmonic Orchestra, Camerata Viesgo, OSPA, OSG, Chamber Orchestra of Conservatoire Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris, Galician Symphonic Orchestra and Freixenet Symphonic Orchestra under Plácido Domingo, David Afkham and Andrés Orozco-Estrada.
Currently plays on a cello made by G. Grancino in 1696.
