Gérard Caussé

Gérard Caussé

Uncontested figure of the viola in France and worldwide, Gérard Caussé has developed, alongside a career as a soloist, in recital, and as a concert artist with the greatest conductors and the most prestigious ensembles, a chamber music activity that is unanimously recognized for the musical generosity of someone who considers himself, since Mozart, as a “bridge” between the lower and higher voices of the string quartet.

A sought-after partner of the greatest musicians, including Gidon Kremer (The Seven Last Words of Christ by Haydn), Dimitry Sitkovetsky (world premiere of Sitkovetsky's transcription of Bach's Goldberg Variations), Mischa Maisky, Michel Portal, Paul Meyer, François-René Duchâble, Renaud Capuçon, Franck Braley, Nicholas Angelich... Gérard Caussé has influenced, through his unique playing and charisma, several generations of musicians who, following him, chose the viola as a vocation.

With an instrument known for its intimate voice and discreet repertoire, not naturally inclined to draw much attention, Caussé has managed to make this voice so distinctive and recognizable among all, inspiring the greatest composers of his time: Henri Dutilleux, Philippe Hersant, Michaël Lévinas, Pascal Dusapin, Hugues Dufour, Betsy Jolas, Wolfgang Rihm, Gérard Pesson...

His commitment to contemporary repertoires, from the founding of the Ensemble Intercontemporain, where Pierre Boulez appointed him as principal violist, has been accompanied by an innovative pedagogical activity recognized at institutions such as the Paris Conservatoire and the Reina Sofía School of Music in Madrid, as well as numerous masterclasses in Verbier, Salzburg, Siena, Villecroze, Lisbon, Havana, and Caracas…

Musical director of the Toulouse Chamber Orchestra and the Camerata of the Caja Duero Foundation in Salamanca, Gérard Caussé embodies all facets of an extraordinary and unparalleled life as a violist, as evidenced by a discography on prestigious labels, with over 60 recordings acclaimed by both the audience and critics, including the recent transcription of Bach's Cello Suites for viola, interwoven with poems by Rilke, recited by Laurent Terzieff, released by Erato.

He shares the stage with his magnificent Gasparo da Salò viola, from 1560.
