Madrid, April 26th, 2023.- The Centro Nacional de Difusión Musical (CNDM), in its commitment to the promotion of young talents, celebrates the European Day of Music with an extraordinary concert (out of subscription) of the Freixenet Symphony Orchestra of the Reina Sofía School of Music, conducted by Juanjo Mena and with the participation as soloist of the violist Noemí Fúnez. On this evening, the young orchestra will tackle three gems of the symphonic repertoire: the overture to The Master Singers of Nuremberg by Richard Wagner, the Concerto for viola and orchestra in D major by Franz A. Hoffmeister and the Symphony No. 1 in D major by Gustav Mahler. The event will take place on Wednesday 21 June at 19:30h in the Symphonic Hall of the Auditorio Nacional de Música.

On Music Day 2023, the CNDM puts the spotlight on the young promises of musical performance through this co-production within the framework of the 30th anniversary of the Reina Sofía School of Music. To this end, it will count on the participation of the Freixenet Symphony Orchestra, created in 1993 and positioned as a national reference. Legends of composition, performance and orchestral conducting such as Lorin Maazel, Luciano Berio, Jordi Savall and Zubin Mehta have taken the stage to conduct young people who have subsequently become soloists or members of the most prestigious musical ensembles on the international scene.

Juanjo Mena

On this occasion Juanjo Mena will be responsible for conducting the orchestra in this concert. Principal Conductor of the BBC Philharmonic for seven seasons (2011-2018), Juanjo Mena has conducted some of the most prestigious orchestras in Europe and North America, such as the Berlin Philharmonic, the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, the Bavarian Radio Orchestra, the London Philharmonic, the Boston and Chicago Symphonies and the New York Philharmonic, among others. Winner of the Premio Nacional de Música in 2017, the conductor from Vitoria - a disciple of Sergiu Celibidache - is currently the Principal Conductor and Artistic Director of the Cincinnati May Festival, one of the most important choral festivals in North America.

Ticket sales

Tickets for the Día de la Música (from 5€ to 15€) are already on sale at the Auditorio Nacional de Música box office, the INAEM theatre network, entradasinaem.es and by calling 91 193 93 21.
