SHOSTAKOVICH, Dmitry
Concerto for cello and orchestra no. 1 in E flat major op. 107 (cello and piano reduction)
II. Moderato
Pablo Ferrández, guest professor
Eva Arderíus, student
Miguel Ángel Ortega Chavaldas, accompanying pianist
For Ferrández, the performance of the movement lacked more tension between the notes to better adhere to the composer's language. They review from the beginning the relationship between the notes of each phrase, emphasizing the importance of playing with more tension, especially on the semitones. The beginning should be articulated but much more legato, especially in the left hand. Thinking about playing it with an orchestra, one must produce more sound and react more to the viola melody. Throughout this part, it is important to exert maximum effort on the fingers when playing to obtain a sound more in line with Shostakovich's language, even resulting emotionally exhausting. Each note has its character, and even if it is the same note, it should not sound the same, recommending changing vibrato for this purpose. He continues to give indications to improve expressiveness, especially at certain special moments, and to ensure the quality of each note.
In the second part, however, that tension from before should be released, noticeable that it has been freed, and to "make it easy." He asks her not to disconnect in the long notes, and they continue to review expressiveness to achieve the richest interpretation possible.
