BOTTESINI, Giovanni
Allegro di concerto for double bass and piano in E minor 'Alla Mendelssohn'
Dorin Marc, guest professor
Jorge Toledo Rodríguez, student
Jesús Gómez Madrigal, accompaying pianist
Prof. Marc begins his masterclass correcting the character for the beginning: the student must avoid playing it like a military march, it should be more elegant. Besides, he makes indications on phrasing, articulation, bowing, bow speed and distribution… to improve expressivity and musical speech and to create a musical space.
The student must always think in the phrasing, and adapt the bow, tempo, dynamic, vibrato and the rest of musical aspects for getting the necessary musical expression to each moment.
Technique is important (working the difficult parts to improve the tuning), but feeling the breathe and musical direction is more important. Then Dorin Marc goes on with indications, mostly about phrasing. In the cadence, the professor asks for less accent at the beginning and more creativity. He continues with comments on phrasing, articulation, dynamics, bowing, fingerings to avoid jumps, glissandi, etc.
To conclude, the professor insists on the idea of improving the technical issues for the faster and virtuosistic passages in this piece, but always thinking about the great and fantastic melody as a singer (breathing, etc.) to avoid a too much martial character.
