SCHUBERT, Franz
Sonata for piano in A minor D 537 op. 164
II. Allegretto quasi andantino
András Schiff, guest professor
Plamena Mangova, student
András Schiff begins his lecture on 2nd movement with comments on staccato and on the left-hand articulation. Then he makes indications about pedals, right-hand articulation and character regarding tonality. This is Neapolitan tonality, so the accompaniment should be like water, using more pedal to avoid a dry pizzicato.
There is a culminating moment with contrast. During it is necessary to make more difference between the previous warm part and the next cold and martial part: the professor mentions again Winterreise by Schubert and the slow movement of a Symphony by G. Mahler.
Later, the warm character returns: left-hand notes should be more melodic and the epilogue very beautiful, like a farewell.
