Álvaro Lozano Cames

Born in Málaga, Spain, in 2006. Since 2023, he studies at the Reina Sofía School of Music’s Aline Foriel-Destezet Cello Chair with professor Jens Peter Maintz. He has been granted scholarships by Grupo Planeta and Fundación Albéniz and plays a Gary Garavaglia cello loaned as an instrument scholarship by Fundación Albéniz.

He began his musical training at the age of 8 with professors S. Rui and Carmen Ma Elena, and from 2020, he studied with Pavel Gomziakov at the Barenboim-Said Academy. Additionally, he has attended masterclasses by Maisky, Monighetti, Helmerson, Schmidt, Polo, Claret, Ferrández, Soltani, Isserlis, Moser, Queyras, Klinger, Zlotnikov, Arias, Severin, Konopelski, Stefanovic, and Ferrández.

He has received the first prize in several competitions such as Jaime Donato Benavente, Cello León, Joaquín Villatoro, Luthiers Clar, 12th A. Janigro International Cello Competition, Verao Clássico Academy Awards, 3rd Gustav Mahler Cello Competition, Peregrinos Musicales (which enabled him to perform as a soloist with the Real Filharmonía de Galicia), the Intercentros Melómano, and, in 2024, at the 35th XXXV Muestra “MálagaCrea” de Jóvenes Intérpretes. He has also received the III ex-aequo prize and the “Summer Camp, Música&Cultura” at the I City of Estepona Young Performers Competition.

He was granted a scholarship by the International Academy of Music of Liechtenstein and took part in activities hosted in the school, such as the Intensive Music Weeks.

As a student of the School, he has played with the Freixenet Orchestra, conducted by Sir András Schiff. He has also been a member of the Areti Trio. He is currently part of the Arriaga Banco de España Quartet, the Alma Mahler Trio and the Fundación Mutua Madrileña Ensemble.
