The Sony Auditorium at the Reina Sofía School of Music houses an organ built by the renowned organ maker Gerhard Grenzing. With the aim of giving voice to such a unique instrument, which often lacks opportunities to be showcased to the public, distinguished national and international performers visit the School to offer one-of-a-kind concerts.
Tobias Willi (1976) has been professor of art organ and organ improvisation at the Zurich University of the Arts for 15 years, where he also heads the department of church music (choir and organ conducting). He has also been principal organist of the Church of St. John in Zurich (Johanneskirche) since 2015 and curator of the new organ at the Tonhalle Zurich.
In addition to these duties, Tobias Willi performs internationally as an organ soloist with a repertoire ranging from Renaissance to contemporary music, currently focusing on the music of France, England and Switzerland; publishes scholarly articles on various topics; gives master classes and teaches every summer as part of the Cours International d'Orgue de Romainmôtier.
Tobias Willi studied organ with Guy Bovet (teaching diploma and soloist with honors) and piano with Heinz Börlin and Jürg Wyttenbach (teaching diploma with honors) at the Hochschule für Musik Basel and from 2003 to 2005 at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris with Olivier Latry and Michel Bouvard.
