The Sony Auditorium at the Reina Sofía School of Music houses an organ built by the renowned organ maker Gerhard Grenzing. With the aim of giving voice to such a unique instrument, which often lacks opportunities to be showcased to the public, distinguished national and international performers visit the School to offer one-of-a-kind concerts.
Michael Schöch is one of few musicians to be equally proficient in both the piano- and organ repertoire to the same extent and standard. Since being awarded 1st prize at the ARD International Music Competition in the organ category, an award that was issued for the first time in 40 years, he has performed at famous venues (Wiener Konzerthaus, Leipziger Gewandhaus, Philharmonie im Gasteig München, Münchener Herkulessaal, Semperoper Dresden, Berliner Philharmonie, cathedrales of Riga, Passau, Merseburg, Mainz and Speyer) and with renowned orchestras (Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra, Tiroler Symphonieorchester Innsbruck, Orchestre de l’Opéra de Rouen).
Michael Schöch’s work is documented in numerous broadcast recordings (such as ORF, BR, SWR, Deutschlandradio) as well as various album productions. The latest recordings are the complete piano and organ works of Julius Reubke (OehmsClassics) and the complete clarinet sonatas by Max Reger (with R. Oberaigner/clarinet, MDG).
Michael Schöch studied piano in Innsbruck (Bozidar Noev), Munich (Gerhard Oppitz) und Salzburg (Pavel Gililov) as well as organ in Munich (Edgar Krapp).
Since 2015 he is Professor of Organ at the Tiroler Landeskonservatorium.
