Duncan McTier: Dittersdorf - Double bass concerto no. 2 (double bass part) - II. Adagio

DITTERSDORF, Carl Ditters von

Concerto for double bass and orchestra no. 2 in E major (double bass part)

II. Adagio

Duncan McTier, professor

Alfredo Fajardo Ramos, student

Duncan McTier works with the student, mainly, the tuning, note by note, also related to dynamics. At the same time, they work other aspects such as searching positions and a good quality sound. Prof. McTier also makes a comparison between some passages and some daily exercises from his own book of exercises.
The professor recommends tuning with the piano - passage by passage - and checking this tuning.
Moreover, they review the mistakes that the student made in the last concert: they work on phrasing issues, and McTier proposes the student to think which daily exercise should be ideal for specific passages in order to help him  improve them. If there is something wrong, the student must stop to correct it.
Afterwards, prof. McTier explains how to play technically large intervals with big shifts, more accurate fingerings and how to practise them. He also recommends the student to make sure and be convinced of the good sound he produces and then, he will be able to convince the audience.
